copy. Baines was one of the great nineteenth
century explorers and artists working in Africa.
In 1868 he was engaged by the South African
Goldfields Company to investigate the newly
discovered goldfields of Tati and Matibililand.
This work, posthumously published, is celebrated
for its interesting insights into native life,
including the coronation of King Lobengula,
first hand accounts of gold discoveries, wagon
travel, bush life, and its descriptions of early
